COMMUNITY EMPOWERED WITH CLEAN WATER: LOCAL LEADERS HAND OVER BOREHOLES AND WELLS

 

In a significant development for the communities in Kyenjojo District, local leaders handed over newly constructed community boreholes and wells to the residents. The ceremony marks a major milestone in the efforts to improve access to clean water and promote public health in the area, enhancing health and well-being.

The 9 boreholes project, funded by the Government of Uganda, extends to the sub counties of Butunduzi, Kigaraale, Butiiti, Nyankwanzi, Bugaaki, Kyembogo

The project, aimed at addressing water scarcity and enhancing the well-being of community members, expected to have a lasting impact on the lives of residents, was graced by the RDC Kyenjojo, Ms Julian Sarah Ayesiga, the District Chairperson, Mr. Gilbert Rubaihayo, sub county chiefs, District water officer, among others.

  The handover ceremony signifies the transfer of ownership and responsibility to the community, empowering them to manage and maintain these vital resources, and this initiative aligns with the commitment to sustainable development, promoting long-term benefits for the community and the environment.

 The District Water Officer, Mr. Anthony Ainomugisha, urged the residents to use the water facilities well, avoid destruction, keep the water safe, map all water points for close monitoring and help with major repairs in case of break down.

The LC 5 Chairperson, thanked the water office, for the great work of providing safe and clean water to the various sub counties, and implored the villages to take good care of their water points. He extended heartfelt gratitude to the government for the funding, implementers, and community members who have worked tirelessly to make this project a reality, whose dedication and collaboration have brought about the success of the projects. He further requested the water office to take up all boreholes in the district under their wings so all major repairs can be taken up by the district.

 He also called upon the residents to engage in coffee, cocoa, and Hass Ovacado growing now that they had easy access to water so they could improve their standards of living.

 He used the same platform to encourage the locals to get fully involved in the upcoming elections, exercise their right to vote, and choose leaders that would add value to their communities.

The RDC thanked the communities for accepting the water initiatives in their areas, especially the land owners who accepted the boreholes to be dug in their land. She also urged the residents to look after the water sources well, called upon the communities and households to each pay a minimum of 1,000 Shillings that would cater for small repairs, and water point security.

 “We look forward to the positive impact this will have on the lives of community members. We are confident that this initiative will contribute to improved health, education, and economic outcomes, ultimately enhancing the overall well-being of the community”, she remarked.

 She urged everyone to continue to work together to ensure the sustainability and effectiveness of these water sources, and to strive towards a future where clean water is accessible to all.

This Water project aligns with the NDP IV 2025/2026 to 2029/2030, which among its objectives focuses on increased access to safe water, improved access to safe water sources, including piped water, boreholes, and protected springs, enhancing improved water quality through effective water treatment, sanitation, and hygiene practices, Sustainable water resources management with emphasis on promoting integrated and sustainable management of water resources to support economic development and environmental protection, with a key strategy of investment in water infrastructure, developing and rehabilitating water infrastructure, including piped water systems, boreholes, and dams.
